September has passed in the blink of an eye. Although the moments seem to fly by, we have been left with some great memories. Our newest course offering, Life Skills 2, has hit the ground running.
Students have enjoyed and benefited from the additional instruction and practice with various tasks of daily living. Another great addition is the return of Pet Therapy with our new friend, Watson, who has already made himself quite comfortable within our school.
We are nearing completion of two major renovation projects. We are putting the finishing touches on an all new Vocational Preparation room, which is already being utilized by students. A special thank you to all of our job coaches, who worked feverishly to ensure the new room was up and running within the first week of school. Students have been actively working with our job coaches and therapists within the room to enhance and refine their abilities in work-related tasks.
We are also working on a new and greatly expanded Sensory Room, which will be adjacent to a newly renovated Physical Therapy Gym. Thank you to our maintenance department for putting in countless hours to prep these rooms. We are anxiously awaiting the installation of new structural supports to properly anchor the new swing equipment within the rooms, which should arrive within the next few weeks. Please be on the lookout for invitations to the ribbon cutting ceremony which should take place in the upcoming months. Funding for all of these renovations was made possible by the Alfiero and Lucia Palestroni Foundation- a grant secured by Horizon High School parents, Mitchell and Shari Caspert – we are so thankful to them for all they have done.
The month of October is proving to be quite busy. First and foremost, “Back to School” night will take place on Thursday, October 1st from 6:30 to 8:30 pm. We hope that all can attend. This is a great opportunity to become familiar with your child’s team of teachers and therapists.
Student government candidates will be presenting their speeches on Friday October 2nd at 1:30 with elections to be held on Wednesday October 7th. Good Luck to all of our candidates! A Guardianship seminar will be offered at HHS the evening of October 16th starting at 6pm. School will be closed for a training day on Friday October 16th. Finally the month ends with our annual Fall Festival that will take place on Friday October 30th.
We are excited to announce that we have a new Wheelin’ and Walkin’ committee for the 2015-2016 school year. The committee has brought forth many new ideas. The first of which is a pumpkin patch at Horizon High School on October 15th. Students will be able to pick, decorate and in some cases carve their own pumpkin.
We appreciate the continued support as we move forward with aspirations of success for our students and their families. We will continue to keep you up to date on all the happenings within Horizon High School.
