CPNJ’s Consumer Advisory Advocacy Board Meets
On October 6th , CPNJ’s CAAB (Consumer Advisory Advocacy Board) met at Horizon High School. The CAAB meets three times and the members include Horizon High School students as well as consumers from the REACH program and the Adult Training Centers. The meeting had presentations from the Community Access Program, the ATLAS program, and the Basking Ridge Group home.
Community Access is a non-profit organization serving individuals with developmental disabilities as well as at-risk youth. Three representatives (including one HHS graduate) spoke about self-advocacy and how to enhance one’s life.
Tracy Lee and Julie Johnston from ATLAS presented on the use of iPads in CPNJ programs. They demonstrated some “cool tech tools” , and in the process illustrated the many ways in which iPads can be useful: for learning, as a communication tool, for visual scheduling, social stories, and just for fun.
The members also met Andreea Gerwin, manager of the Basking Ridge group home. She spoke about some of the activities the residents are involved in –especially crafts, which she offered to facilitate at the next CAAB meeting!
